Periodista y financista estadounidense nacido en Alemania. En 1853 emigró a EE.UU., donde trabajó primero en periódicos en idioma alemán. Durante la guerra de Secesión fue corresponsal de dos periódicos de la ciudad de Nueva York. En 1881 compró la revista Nation y el New York Evening Post. En la década de 1870 organizó varias líneas de ferrocarril en Oregón. Entre 1881 y 1884 fue presidente ejecutivo de Northern Pacific Railway Co., un ferrocarril transcontinental que fue completado durante su administración a pesar de que los costos superaron ampliamente los previstos, y entre 1888 y 1893 fue presidente del directorio. Compró dos empresas Edison y en 1889 creó la sociedad Edison General Electric Co. Fue su presidente ejecutivo hasta que la empresa se reorganizó en 1892 con la social General Electric Co. (GE).
